Housing/Homelessness
On December 5 and 6, 2011, more than 50 congregants and friends attended dinner gatherings to learn what First Universalist’s new Umbrella Pilot Project is about -- one on housing/homelessness, the other on environment/sustainability -- and to brainstorm ideas for future action. Participants learned about the proposed leadership structure, the focus on diversifying our approaches to addressing issues, and how we will be more intentional about building partnerships with community groups. A. Housing issue
We have a very active involvement with Habitat for Humanity, which you can read about here.
B. Homelessness issue
There are several ways First Universalist Church acts on the issue of homelessness:
- We provide home cooked meals and fellowship at the Simpson Shelter.
- We knit warm hats for the homeless.
- We collect socks and other clothing to contribute to Simpson residents, and have donated towels and glassware to support shelter operations. One of our members has responded to the shelter’s continuing need for overnight volunteer staff and describes it as an especially rewarding outreach experience.
- We conduct a recruitment drive two times a year to provide volunteer hosts/guides at Project Homeless Connect, a city-wide gathering of agencies and programs designed to help homeless people gain access to essential services. The most recent event happened December 12, 2011. Learn more here.
- We have food collection drives, often for the Joyce Food Shelf.
