Universal Folk Orchestra

Watch out for UFO

The Folk Band is growing and reorganizing, and we invite your participation. We welcome singers and musicians of all ages and interests. The new organization will be called Universal Folk Orchestra (UFO). It will emphasize two long-standing strengths in the musical tradition of this church – folk songs and instrumental chamber music. We will use words and sounds to more fully express our spiritual values, and we will have a lot of fun doing it. Our main purpose will be to make music together, meeting every week throughout the church year. We will perform for specific services, tailoring our selections to the sermon topic, and we will also perform for other church events (e.g., dances, auctions, Solstice Service) and hold at least one annual concert. We welcome your ideas for expanding our repertoire of folk songs and instrumental chamber music. In both cases, we seek to explore both traditional and contemporary musical forms. John Jensen will continue to provide his superb musical guidance, but our goal is for these ideas and directions to come primarily from the group, i.e., from you. We welcome more singers and strummers, but we particularly need instrumental musicians – woodwinds, strings, brass, percussion. We will acquire printed musical scores when available, and compose arrangements when needed, so we welcome your suggestions and talents in those areas as well. We meet virtually every week throughout the church year (as indicated in the church calendar) in the Sanctuary from 5:15 to 6 (classical chamber ensemble) and 6 to 7:30 (folk band). Come for either or both.  Bring instruments, musical scores, recordings. Please send email to Dave Thomas (ddt@umn.edu) to indicate your interest.
