Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone join?
Almost! We define "young adults" according to the Unitarian Universalist Association guidelines as anyone ages 18-35. If you're in that age group, you qualify. You may attend FUYAG as frequently or infrequently as you wish. Because young adults are often in life transitions (jobs, school, relocation etc.) group membership is in fairly constant flux. That being said, we have a core group of about 10 members who usually always participate in FUYAG events.
Is there an "official process" for group membership?
Nope. Come as you are.
Where does FUYAG meet?
Most of the time, the group meets in the Arches Room, located on the Sanctuary side of the building at the top of the staircase just behind the balcony. If meeting elsewhere, information will be noted on the website and on the yahoo group list.
If I come to a FUYAG meeting, what should I expect?
The group begins with the symbolic chalice lighting and "check-in." Group members introduce themselves and share a current joy or concern in their lives. During the main program time, usually one or two members will lead an activity, game or discussion (see "Mindful vs. Mindless Gatherings" below). Sometimes we have a guest leader, or special program. We always have tasty snacks and close the group with a ritual reading and song.
What's the difference between Mindful and Mindless Gatherings?
Mindful Gatherings are usually the 1st Thursday of the month. The topics and activities are usually more serious in nature and focus on spirituality, current events, identity or personal sharing. Mindless Gatherings are usually the 2nd Thursday of the month and create time for fun and fellowship. We usually focus on lighter activities like playing games, cooking, going outside or other fun field trips in the community.
What's the deal with the potlucks?
The potlucks are a great way to get involved with the group, especially if you have Thursday night commitments that make it hard for you to attend Gatherings. They're usually held on the Sunday before the 4th Thursday of each month. Just show up and bring a dish to share.
Is FUYAG a young adult singles group?
No. The goal of FUYAG is to build community with each other, the church, and the wider Unitarian Universalist movement. Most activities focus on group cohesion and bonding rather than individual interpersonal relationships. That being said, FUYAG is a great place to make friends and many members socialize outside of "official" group meeting times.
Who leads the group and plans activities?
FUYAG is led by a Steering Committee comprised of self-selected FUYAG members. Anyone is welcome and encouraged to attend these monthly meetings, usually the first Sunday of the month in the Meditation Room. The committee sets the calendar and recruits gathering leaders, as needed. Have an idea or want to lead a FUYAG gathering? Attend a Steering Committee meeting, or contact Katie Heaton at katie@firstuniv.org.
